Firm to make safety film for nuclear plants 10 January 2010 By Elaine O’Regan
Media production firm Agtel has secured an EU contract, worth €100,000, to produce training footage in five languages.
The company will begin pre-production work on the 12-month project, for the EU’s Directorate General (DG) Energy and Transport, this month.
It will produce an information video, required under new EU legislation, to provide safety training to workers in nuclear installations throughout Europe.
The footage will be scripted and produced in five languages: English, French, German, Portuguese and Polish.
‘‘DG Energy and Transport has commissioned Agtel to produce an information video film that will ensure workers and visitors to its facilities are correctly informed about the radiological risks that exist," said John Cummins, managing director of Agtel.
‘‘Agtel’s strong track record in educational production, combined with a specific expertise in science communication - gained through our work for the European Space Agency and Ireland’s Discover Science and Engineering Programme - made the company a natural choice for undertaking this work."
The project is the company’s sixth for the European Parliament. It recently completed a 3DDVDanimation, in 22 languages, on the role and function of the parliament. It has also produced four educational DVDs, aimed at schoolchildren, for the European Space Agency.
‘‘Agtel has two strategic priorities in 2010.The first is to intensify our focus on the use of video for workplace e-learning courseware and the second is to continue our pursuit of international opportunities," said Cummins.
‘‘This new contract is particularly welcome as it responds to both of these priorities. Agtel has its roots in learning, education and video. With broadband speeds now allowing video to run online, there is a whole new world of opportunity opening up for the use of video in academic and workplace learning contexts.
‘‘There is a real appetite for good video content and we are investing in our competencies and production systems to ensure we can respond to this demand in a competitive manner.
The award of this contract proves that we can be competitive within the broader European market and therefore expands our potential market significantly."
Agtel is a digital media, e learning and video production company. Established in 1979, the company employs 23 fulltime and 12 part-time staff.
The most recent accounts for Agtel and its television production unit, Independent Pictures, show profit before tax of €75,011 for the 12 months ended April 30, 2008. Shareholders’ funds for the period were €2,741,990, compared to €2,675,554 for the year previous.
