Irish-language paper gets the green light
Sunday, November 29, 2009  By Anton McCabe
The contract to publish an Irishlanguage weekly paper has been awarded to a group called Torann na dTonn (Noise of the Waves).

Foras na Gaeilge, the crossborder Irish language body which awarded the contract, is meeting the company next week to discuss details.

The contract is worth €1.6 million over four years. The working title of the new publication is Gaelsceal. It will be full-colour and 32 pages. Torann na dTonn is a joint venture between the Galway-based Connacht Tribune newspaper group and Connemara-based EoTeilifis, a TV production and new media company.

The directors are Maire Ni Thuathail, EoTeilifis and David Hickey, chief executive of the Connacht Tribune.

Hickey said that detailed preparations were now under way.

‘‘We purposely did not make the bid with an editorial team in place,” he said. ‘‘We wanted the chance to go out and recruit the best people. That process will be starting in the next few weeks.”

The new title will have a presence on the internet, although that is not the immediate priority.

‘‘Our first aim is to deliver a weekly newspaper with an internet presence, though we are not sure what form that will take,” Hickey said.
